Answering a distress call, the U.S.S. Enterprise arrives in orbit around the planet Scalos. However, when Captain Kirk takes a landing party down to the surface he finds the Scalosian city to be completely deserted, and no life forms register on any scans. The mystery deepens when the inexperienced crewman Compton samples the local water and immediately disappears. After Kirk and the others return to the ship, the Enterprise begins experiencing strange malfunctions; then, when an alien device is found in engineering, Kirk calls a full alert. While on the bridge, Kirk hears a strange buzzing noise, and something drops into his coffee; when he takes a sip, his metabolism is suddenly 'accelerated' to an incredibly fast rate, enabling him to see the missing Scalosians, who are now aboard his ship. Their Queen, Deela, informs Kirk that she has chosen him to become her consort; because her people have been contaminated by radiation, she plans to cryogenically freeze the Enterprise crew and use them to provide a ready gene pool to integrate into their society. Kirk discovers that his missing crewman has joined the Scalosians; however, when Compton then accidentally cuts himself he instantly suffers an accelerated death. Can Kirk make Spock and McCoy aware of the invaders, or will he lose command of the Enterprise and be forced to stay in his accelerated state forever?
